In 2004 and 2005 I traveled to the Peoples Republic of China to introduce therapeutic and forensic behavioral profiling Through Written Communication to business professionals, educators and students.

This was a very unique and rewarding experience for me personally. Chinese Culture and its long, rich history has been a very large part of my life since a very young age. I was founder and director of Boston Chinese American Athletic Assoc, Inc., a martial arts school turned non-profit organization located in Boston's Chinatown during the 1980's. Working with Boston Public High Schools, Boston Juvenile and Municipal Courts, CHINS on truancy, gang/drug related and communication issues. Being a member of the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence and Advocacy Project ( ASAP) keeps me in involved with Boston's Asian community to this Day.

Therapeutic / forensic behavioral profiling Through Written Communication is a new concept and was somewhat misunderstood initially by the Chinese, however once they understood the concept and the psychology associated with the traits I detected, analyzed and identified in their handwriting, it was well received in China.

China is changing day by day, with the introduction of the internet China's younger generation is being exposed to many new concepts, ideas and information that was not available to them in years past. Working with Middle school, High school, College students and their parents was a very rewarding experience for me. Their thirst for everything and anything Western is insatiable.

These young people are brilliant, attending school everyday from 6:00am to 6:00pm and on Saturday and Sunday. As brilliant as they are, they can also be very trusting and somewhat naive when it comes to the dark side of human behavior and our two strongest drives of sex and aggression. Westerners sometimes misinterpret the Chinese people as being somewhat cold, unemotional and standoffish. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Chinese people are very warm, loving, generous and can be quite emotional. They live and die for their children, wanting them to have a good future and a family of their own one day. Worldwide, I believe Chinese women are the backbone of the family and China's true strength.

China is now experiencing our version of the 60's sexual revolution. The younger generation is experiencing sex at a younger age but are ill equipped to deal with the consequences and emotional aftermath that follows their openness and sexual experimentation / expression. Therapeutic / forensic behavioral profiling helped them acquire a better understanding of their emotional makeup and those in their personal and professional life. Profiling the handwriting of the students and educators who could speak and write in English was easy for me, I just had to be somewhat careful in how I described the traits I detected in their handwriting, as loss of face (embarrassment) is something the Chinese do not deal with well.

The true test came when one of the business professionals asked me if I could detect, identify and analyze the same traits in a sample of Chinese traditional handwriting as I find in a sample of English cursive handwriting, as many people in China do not read, speak or write in English. I believe it would be possible but somewhat limited, the reason being is that many traits that we detect and analyze in English cursive handwriting that are made on an unconscious level, are commonly made in Chinese traditional handwriting as part of that letter, word formation. With a set of procedures in mind, I had my interpreter Ms. Shuwen Wu write a paragraph in Chinese traditional handwriting writing with no embellishments.

I then had all the people in attendance write the same paragraph. I used my interpreters strict Chinese traditional handwriting as my basis for comparison to the other handwriting samples provided.

The traits I was able to detect, identify and analyze were, and are not limited, to the following:

  • Writing Slant (Emotion)

  • Writing Pressure (Intensity)

  • Corrugations

  • Writing Size

  • Dominant Behavior

  • Anger

  • Jealousy

  • Tenacity

  • Deliberateness

  • Timidity

  • Variable Slant (Moodiness)

  • Sensuality

  • Irritability

  • Temper

  • Sarcasm

  • Domineering Behavior

  • Acquisitiveness

  • Physical Imagination

  • Intellectual Imagination

  • Concentration

I gave each person my analysis based on the above listed traits and they were amazed with the amount of information I was able to provide them with the limited number of traits I was able to detect, identify and analyze. Each person took notes and gave me their personal accuracy rating of my analysis. Overall I was given a 90 -92% accuracy rating. I explained that many other key traits needed to perform a thorough Forensic Threat Assessment Analysis would need to be studied and analyzed in more detail before an accurate assessment of the writer could be given. The reason for this is many of the researched traits needed to conduct an accurate comprehensive Therapeutic / forensic profile in western cursive handwriting are commonly found in Chinese traditional handwriting as a part of that word formation. So it would be very easy for a Western Handwriting Examiner to misinterpret these similar looking traits and give a false read on the writer.

Much more work and study will need to be conducted in the months to come so one day this highly accurate diagnostic tool will be available / taught within The Peoples Republic of China.
